Maintenance and service life of laser devices: what operators need to know

A laser device only earns money as long as it runs reliably. This page shows what wears in which class of device: diode handpiece, flashlamp, crystal, HIFU cartridge or needle tip. It also explains what a shot counter tells you and how long 100 million shots last in everyday use.

It then covers the practical topics: daily care, cooling water and filters, calibration, signs of declining performance, warranty, spare parts and planning maintenance costs. The examples come from the SIACSKIN range, from the DEWEON 4LD and the AlexDUAL UFO through the PICOLO S to the VCL DERMALIGHT.

Which parts of a laser device wear out, and which last for many years?

It is mainly the light source that wears, and with good care everything else lasts for many years. Which source this is depends on the device class. In a diode laser the laser bars in the handpiece age. In solid-state lasers such as alexandrite and Nd:YAG it is mainly the light source exciting the crystal that ages, usually a flashlamp, while the crystal itself lasts a very long time. In light systems, too, it is the flashlamp. In addition, all devices have cooling water, filters, protective windows and pumps. Housing, power supply unit and control electronics are not typical wear parts. SIACSKIN states the service life in shots: around 100 million for the handpiece of the DEWEON 4LD, 100 million for the crystal of the AlexDUAL UFO and 5 million for the PICOLO S.

How long do 100 million shots last in day-to-day studio operation?

Even in a studio with high utilisation, 100 million shots last for many years. A calculation makes this tangible: a large body area uses from a few hundred to more than ten thousand shots, depending on the technique and spot size. Example: at 30,000 shots per working day and 250 working days a year, that is 7.5 million shots annually, and 100 million would be reached after a good 13 years. The in-motion technique with a high repetition rate uses more shots than the stamping technique, and large spots fewer than small ones. The DEWEON 4LD is designed for around 100 million shots at the handpiece, and the crystal of the AlexDUAL UFO likewise for 100 million. The light source therefore hardly limits use in day-to-day operation.

What does the shot counter on a laser device show, and how do I interpret it?

The shot counter shows how many pulses the light source has delivered in total and is thus the mileage reading of your device. It answers three questions: how much service life is left, how many shots a treatment uses on average and when maintenance is due. Note the reading once a month. If consumption per treatment rises without the treatment areas having changed, someone is working with too much overlap, or the device needs more passes because its output is declining. On the DEWEON 4LD, the DERMAFORCE BBL PRO and the PICOLO L, shot counting is part of the client management system. It is documented together with client data and treated areas.

How can I tell that my laser's output is declining?

You notice it first in the result: the usual skin reaction fails to appear at the same setting, and clients report that hairs fall out later or incompletely. Further signs are a changed sound on firing, an uneven spot imprint, more frequent temperature or flow messages and longer pauses until the device is ready again. In this case do not simply increase the energy. Often the cause is a dirty window, old cooling water or a clogged filter, and that can be remedied quickly. If the effect remains weak after cleaning and a water change, the service team should measure the energy delivered. With the DEWEON 4LD the documented shot count helps to distinguish wear from a lapse in care.

What care does a laser device need daily, weekly and monthly?

Every day you clean the handpiece and light aperture after each treatment, every week you check the water level and ventilation, and every month the filters, cables and shot count. You remove gel, hair residues and skin particles with a soft, lint-free cloth and the agent approved by the manufacturer, without scrubbing. In the evening you let the device cool down before switching it off. Once a month you vacuum the ventilation grilles and check the cable to the handpiece for kinks and pressure marks. On the DEWEON 4LD the sapphire window deserves the most attention, on the PICOLO S the optics of the 5 probes. Record the routine as a checklist on the device and have it signed off, so that care does not depend on one individual.

Cooling water and filters: what do I need to check regularly on a laser's cooling system?

On the cooling system you regularly check three things: water level, water quality and unobstructed filters. Only the water specified by the manufacturer belongs in the circuit, as a rule distilled or deionised. Tap water introduces limescale and germs, which clog the channels in the handpiece and cause the light source to overheat. The water is changed according to the manufacturer's instructions, frequently every few months, and immediately if it turns cloudy. You check water filters and air filters at the same intervals and replace or clean them. The DEWEON 4LD cools with water, air and semiconductor technology, the AlexDUAL UFO with a compressor and 4-fold cooling without an external cooling unit. Both need clearance from the wall and a room that does not heat up, otherwise the cooling operates at its limit.

What does calibration mean for a laser device, and how often is the energy measured?

Calibration means that the energy actually delivered is checked with a measuring instrument and brought into line with the displayed value. This is important because every light source declines somewhat over time and dirty optics additionally absorb light. If the display shows 20 J/cm², perhaps only 16 are actually delivered, and the treatment is less effective without your seeing it on the device. Measurement usually takes place during annual maintenance, and also after replacement of the handpiece, lamp or optics and when results are out of the ordinary. Have the measured values given to you in writing and file them with the device documentation. SIACSKIN offers regular maintenance. With a device such as the AlexDUAL UFO or the PICOLO XL, ask specifically for the measurement report.

What wears out in a Q-switched or picosecond laser: lamp, crystal or optics?

In Q-switched and picosecond lasers, it is mainly the light source exciting the crystal and the optics in the beam path that wear. In most devices this light source is a flashlamp, which loses a little output with every pulse and is replaced after a certain number of shots. Lenses and protective windows suffer from the high peak powers: dust or splashes on the optics burn in and make the beam uneven. The crystal itself lasts a very long time if the cooling is right. The PICOLO S is specified at 5 million shots. For the PICOLO L and the PICOLO XL, the SIACSKIN service team will tell you the intervals. With all three, keep the optics on the handpiece clean and never work with a damaged protective window.

How long does an LED hair removal system last, and what maintenance does it need?

An LED system lasts a very long time, because LEDs, as a semiconductor light source, have no lamp that is replaced regularly. Cooling remains the decisive factor: LEDs too age faster if they get too warm. Maintenance is therefore similar to that of a diode laser. You clean the light exit window after every treatment, keep the air passages clear and change the cooling water according to the manufacturer's instructions. The VCL DERMALIGHT is designed for up to 100 million applications and is cooled with air and water. With a spot of 18 × 24 mm and courses of 4 to 8 sessions, that is enough for many years of studio operation. Its client management system keeps count of the shots, so you can see the status at any time.

What wear parts do HIFU and RF microneedling have compared with a laser?

With HIFU the cartridge is the wear part, with RF microneedling the needle tip, and both are replaced considerably more often than the light source of a laser. The transducer in a HIFU cartridge is designed for a fixed number of lines, and a counter shows how many remain. For reasons of hygiene, needle tips are single-use items per client. On the other hand, optics care and protective windows are not required. In the costing these are costs per treatment, not per year. On the DERMALIFT and the DERMALIFT PRO, each cartridge has 20,000 lines. For the EUPHEUS M8 the replacement needles are available in the SIACSKIN shop. Plan your stock so that there is always at least one set in reserve.

Which operating errors shorten the service life of a laser device the most?

Heat, dirt and impacts do the most damage: firing without skin contact or without sufficient gel, a dirty window, switching off abruptly straight after the last treatment and a handpiece that is dropped. Burnt-on gel absorbs light and damages the surface. Anyone who disconnects the device from the mains immediately deprives the cooling of the time it needs to dissipate residual heat. Kinked or crushed cables and hoses lead to failures that are expensive and avoidable. Frost during transport is also critical if there is still water in the circuit. Always place the handpiece of the DEWEON 4LD in its holder, never on the treatment couch. The SIACSKIN training at handover demonstrates these routines directly on the device.

What do error messages about water level, flow or temperature on a laser device mean?

Such messages mean that the cooling is insufficient, and the device locks itself to protect the light source. With a water level message, there is too little water in the tank. With a flow message, a hose is kinked, a filter is clogged or there is air in the circuit. With a temperature message, the room is too warm, the ventilation is covered or the workload is too high. Check these points calmly, top up only with the specified water and let the device cool down. Never bypass a lock and do not keep restarting. If the message returns, note the text, shot count and situation and contact the service team. SIACSKIN offers lifetime support, for the DEWEON 4LD as well as for the AlexDUAL UFO.

What does the warranty on a laser device cover, and what counts as wear and tear?

A manufacturer's warranty covers defects attributable to materials or manufacturing, but usually not normal consumption and not damage caused by incorrect operation. Consumption typically includes parts with a limited number of shots or lines, needle tips, filters and cooling water. Damage from being dropped, the wrong water or burnt-on residues usually count as operating errors. Read the terms before buying and ask how the handpiece is treated, because that is where the greatest value lies. SIACSKIN gives a 2-year manufacturer's warranty on its devices. In the event of a defect, the device is repaired or replaced under the statutory liability for defects and the warranty. The details are set out on the Service, Maintenance and Warranty page.

How long will I be able to get spare parts and support for my laser device?

At SIACSKIN you receive lifetime support, and spare parts and consumables are generally available within a few days, by express delivery if required. You should clarify this point with every manufacturer before buying. A device is only economical for as long as handpieces, lamps, needles and circuit boards are available for it and someone maintains the software. Ask about delivery times, about a dedicated contact person and about who carries out repairs at your location. SIACSKIN is itself the manufacturer, and enquiries are answered within 24 hours. You order the replacement needles for the EUPHEUS M8 directly in the shop.

How much should a studio set aside for maintenance and wear parts for its laser?

Plan the reserve per treatment, not as an annual sum, and it will grow in line with utilisation. To do this, divide the price of the wear part by its service life in shots and multiply by the consumption per treatment. Added to this are annual maintenance, cooling water, filters and sundries. The longer the light source lasts, the smaller this share becomes. Set the money aside monthly, even during the warranty period, so that a replacement years later does not leave a gap. With the DEWEON 4LD and its roughly 100 million shots at the handpiece, wear per treatment is barely significant. The TULIX works without consumables and without a shot limit. With the SIACSKIN price calculator you set instalment, costs and earnings against each other.
