Laser hair removal in the intimate area: bikini line, Brazilian and Hollywood

Bikini line, Brazilian or Hollywood: laser hair removal in the intimate area is one of the most frequent requests in the studio and one of the areas that raise the most questions. How far is the laser applied, how much does it sting, what applies during your period, and what should be borne in mind with darker skin, shaving beforehand or small spots afterwards? Here you will find answers on procedure, sessions, hygiene and aftercare, for women and men.

Suitable devices are the DEWEON 4LD diode laser with four wavelengths and sapphire cooling, the AlexDUAL UFO with alexandrite and Nd:YAG for skin types I to VI, and the KYROMASTER cold-air device for additional comfort.

Bikini line, Brazilian or Hollywood: what is the difference when lasering the intimate area?

The difference lies in how much hair is removed. The classic bikini line covers only the hairs that extend beyond the edge of your underwear at the sides and top. With a Brazilian, the mons pubis, outer labia and usually the cleft between the buttocks are added, and on request a strip or triangle is left. Hollywood means completely hair-free from front to back. The terms are not used consistently, so make sure to clarify at the initial consultation exactly which areas are meant. For the studio, this changes the time and spot size. The DEWEON 4LD has spots from 15 × 15 mm for narrow areas up to 15 × 40 mm for larger areas, and its AI skin analyser selects wavelength and energy automatically.

How many sessions does laser hair removal in the intimate area take and at what intervals?

The usual course is 6 to 8 sessions at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks, or more like 8 to 10 with very dense hair, for example in men. The hairs in the intimate area are dark and coarse and absorb a lot of energy, so you often see markedly less hair and the first bare patches after just 2 to 3 appointments. Several sessions are still needed because the laser only affects hairs in the growth phase and some follicles are always resting. Shorter intervals achieve nothing, and longer ones simply stretch out the course of treatment. An appointment takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the extent. The AlexDUAL UFO works with square spots of 10 to 40 mm and, with alexandrite and Nd:YAG, covers skin types I to VI.

How painful is laser hair removal in the intimate area and what eases the pinching sensation?

The intimate area is one of the more sensitive areas, and most people describe the pulses as a brief, hot pinch that is easy to tolerate. You feel it most in the first sessions because many thick hairs absorb energy at the same time. It becomes milder with every session. Shortly before and during your period the skin is more sensitive to pain, so if possible schedule the appointment for the time afterwards. A thorough shave also helps, because no stubble is then left to burn on the skin. Cooling makes the biggest difference. The DEWEON 4LD cools through a sapphire at temperatures down to minus 50 °C directly at the handpiece. The KYROMASTER additionally blows cold air at temperatures down to minus 50 °C onto the skin: before, during and after the pulses.

Why is the skin in the intimate area darker and what does that mean for the laser?

The skin in the intimate area naturally contains more melanin than the skin on the abdomen or legs, and hormones and friction intensify this. For the laser this means: the epidermis itself absorbs more energy, and the risk of redness, blisters or pigmentation changes rises. Settings are therefore based on the darkest part of the area, not on the skin tone of the forearm. Longer wavelengths, longer pulses and good cooling protect the epidermis. The DEWEON 4LD offers 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm, and its AI skin analyser selects wavelength and energy automatically. For skin types V to VI, the Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm in the AlexDUAL UFO is the suitable choice.

What does an appointment for laser hair removal in the intimate area involve?

You arrive freshly shaved and without cream or deodorant on the skin, and the treatment itself takes 10 to 30 minutes. You undress from the waist down and usually receive disposable underwear; the couch has a fresh cover. The practitioner wears gloves and cleans the skin, and you both put on protective eyewear. The area is then lasered section by section. For this you change position several times so that the skin is taut and every area remains easy to reach. At the end the skin is cooled and a soothing care product is applied. Hygiene is standard: the handpiece is disinfected before and after every appointment. With the DEWEON 4LD, narrow areas can be treated precisely with the 15 × 15 mm spot.

Can the intimate area be lasered during your period?

It is possible, but an appointment outside your period is more comfortable. The bikini line alone can be treated without problems with a tampon or menstrual cup. For a Brazilian or Hollywood, many studios postpone the appointment for hygiene reasons, so ask beforehand how this is handled there. In addition, the skin reacts more sensitively to pain in the days before and during bleeding. The cycle has no influence on how well the laser works. If the appointment does fall on these days, good cooling helps. The KYROMASTER cools with cold air at temperatures down to minus 50 °C before, during and after the pulses and complements the sapphire cooling in the handpiece of the DEWEON 4LD.

How do you shave the intimate area correctly before a laser appointment?

Shave the area smooth the day before, with a fresh blade and shaving gel, in the direction of hair growth. This gives the skin time to calm down before lasering, and the hair is still in the root, where the laser needs it. If stubble is left standing, it burns on the skin, which hurts and wastes energy. Wax, sugaring, epilators and tweezers are off limits in the 4 weeks beforehand because they remove the root. Hair removal cream irritates the skin and is also not a good idea shortly before. The studio will reshave hard-to-reach areas if needed. With the AlexDUAL UFO, the SIA AI uses cameras on the handpiece to set skin type, body area and energy automatically.

Small bumps after lasering the intimate area: what is normal and when should you seek advice?

Small red bumps around the hair follicles are normal straight after the session and usually subside within a day. In the days afterwards, individual pimples can appear if heat, sweat and friction inflame the irritated follicles. This happens more easily in the intimate area than on the arms or legs. Loose cotton underwear, lukewarm showers, a mild skincare product and 1 to 2 days without exercise and saunas then help. Do not squeeze or scratch. Contact the studio and have a doctor take a look if blisters, crusts, pus-filled or painful areas develop, or if the redness does not go down after a few days. Good cooling during treatment keeps irritation low. The DEWEON 4LD cools through a sapphire directly at the handpiece, and the KYROMASTER adds cold air before, during and after the pulses.

Can lasering the intimate area affect fertility, in women or in men?

According to current knowledge, no: there is no evidence that laser hair removal affects fertility. The light penetrates only a few millimetres into the skin, just deep enough for the hair root. The ovaries and uterus lie many centimetres deeper. It is also light and heat, not ionising radiation as in X-rays. The heat is generated in the hair and fades within seconds. On the scrotum too, the energy is absorbed in the skin and hair. The skin there is, however, thin, wrinkled and darker, so it is pulled taut and the energy is dosed cautiously. With the AlexDUAL UFO, the SIA AI uses cameras on the handpiece to set skin type, body area and energy automatically. As a precaution, no lasering is carried out during pregnancy all the same.

What should you avoid after lasering the intimate area: exercise, sauna, sex?

For the first 24 to 48 hours you should avoid everything that heats or rubs the skin: exercise, saunas, hot baths, swimming pools, tight trousers and synthetic underwear. It is also better to wait a day before having sex, because friction can inflame the irritated follicles. Loose cotton, lukewarm showers and a mild, fragrance-free skincare product are enough. Redness and small swellings around the hairs are normal and usually subside within a day. After 1 to 3 weeks the treated hairs push out and fall away; do not pluck them. Sun and sunbeds are off limits at the bikini line for 2 weeks. The KYROMASTER cools the skin with cold air directly after treatment.

Who should wait before having laser hair removal in the intimate area?

You should wait during pregnancy, with acute genital herpes, a fungal or other infection, with inflamed ingrown hairs, and on a bikini line that is freshly tanned or treated with self-tanner. Freshly done intimate piercings and tattoos must also heal first. Tattooed skin is generally left out because the ink pigment absorbs the laser energy. If you take medication that causes photosensitivity, the appointment is postponed. Conspicuous or changed moles should be looked at beforehand by a dermatologist. Almost all of this merely postpones treatment rather than ruling it out. The client management system of the DEWEON 4LD stores client data and treated areas, so that the studio has such points in view at every appointment.

How far is the intimate area lasered and are the labia treated too?

Lasering is carried out wherever there is hair-bearing skin, including on the outer labia. It stops at the mucous membrane: the inner labia and the vaginal opening are not treated, and no hair grows there anyway. Towards the back, the perineum and the cleft between the buttocks up to the anus can be included. You decide the boundary yourself, and the studio marks it beforehand on request. Piercings are removed or covered. In these transitional areas the skin is thin and darker, and a small spot and adjusted energy are used. The spot of the AlexDUAL UFO can be reduced to 10 mm, and the SIA AI with cameras on the handpiece sets skin type, body area and energy automatically.

Remove everything or leave a strip: what should you consider before lasering?

Bear in mind that the result is long-lasting: lasered hairs largely do not come back, even if your taste changes. If you are unsure, start with the bikini line or leave a strip or triangle. The area can be extended at any time later, but not reversed. An intermediate solution is to treat the mons pubis only 2 to 3 times. The hair that remains is then sparser and softer, and ingrown hairs become less frequent. What matters is a clean outline that follows the same line at every appointment. The DEWEON 4LD works with spots from 15 × 15 mm, and its client management system documents the treated areas.

How long does the result last in the intimate area and are top-ups needed later?

After a completed course of treatment, the intimate area generally stays markedly less hairy for years, although individual hairs can grow back. They are usually finer and lighter than before. Many people come for a top-up once a year or less often. New hairs appear mainly when hormones change, for example in pregnancy, after stopping the pill or with PCOS. Dormant follicles that were not yet producing hair during the course of treatment then become active. How stable the result is also depends on whether wavelength and energy suited the skin and hair. With alexandrite and Nd:YAG, the AlexDUAL UFO covers skin types I to VI.

What should a studio bear in mind when offering laser hair removal in the intimate area?

The key factors are discretion, fixed hygiene procedures and a clear agreement on the area. Plan for a lockable room, disposable underwear, fresh covers and gloves, and clarify in advance whether clients prefer a female or male practitioner. The boundaries of the treatment should be recorded in writing in the consent form. A slot of 15 to 30 minutes is sufficient, so the intimate area combines well with underarms or legs in a package. It is among the most frequently booked areas. Technically, you need small spots, strong cooling and a setting for darker skin. The DEWEON 4LD comes with spots from 15 × 15 mm, sapphire cooling down to minus 50 °C and four wavelengths for all skin types.
