SHR or Diode Laser? What Is Behind SHR Lasers and IPL
SHR or diode laser? Many studios that offer hair removal or want to replace their device ask themselves this question. The answer begins with a clarification: SHR stands for “Super Hair Removal” and describes a mode of operation, not a light source. A device with an SHR mode can be an IPL device with a flash lamp or a diode laser with fixed wavelengths. Anyone comparing “SHR laser or IPL” is therefore often comparing terms at different levels. This page explains the in-motion method behind SHR, shows the difference between IPL with SHR and a true diode laser and places the DEWEON 4LD in context.
What SHR means technically
SHR refers to a treatment technique with low energy per pulse and a high pulse rate. Instead of stamping the area pulse by pulse with full energy, the handpiece glides over the skin repeatedly in lanes. The heat in the hair follicle builds up gradually over the passes. This approach is called the in-motion method.
The term became known as a treatment mode of an 810 nm diode laser that was cleared in the USA in 2011 with repetition rates of up to 10 Hz. In the meantime, a large number of IPL devices also carry the designation “SHR”. For the technology, the following therefore applies: SHR says how the treatment is done, but not with what.
What studies show about the in-motion principle
- In a split-face study with 42 patients, an 810 nm diode laser in SHR mode with low energy and high frequency achieved a median hair reduction of 90.5%, a diode laser with high energy per pulse 85%. The difference was not statistically significant; pain scores in SHR mode were low.
- A split study with 30 people of skin types I to IV compared classic IPL with an in-motion IPL technique. Both reduced hair growth with no significant difference in efficacy; the in-motion technique was significantly less painful.
The studies are small, and the authors themselves call for further research. But they support a core statement: in-motion mainly brings comfort and speed on large areas. The effect is still determined by the light source with its wavelength, energy and cooling.
The real difference: IPL or true laser
Whether a device works with SHR, in glide mode or in stamp mode: what matters is which light goes into the skin.
| Feature | IPL with SHR or in-motion mode | True diode laser (DEWEON 4LD) |
|---|---|---|
| Light source | Flash lamp with broad spectrum, narrowed by filters | Laser diodes with fixed wavelengths |
| Wavelength | a range, for hair reduction roughly from 640 nm upward | 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm |
| Energy in the hair | spread across many wavelengths, part of which mainly burdens the epidermis | concentrated on wavelengths tuned to melanin and penetration depth |
| Skin types | mainly light skin with dark hair | almost all skin types |
| Sessions | often more sessions and touch-ups | usually 6 to 8 sessions per area |
| Mode of operation | in-motion possible | Glide mode with up to 30 Hz, pulse duration 1–200 ms |
More on comparing the light sources can be found in the guide Laser or IPL; the physics behind it is explained in Laser wavelengths explained.
Why the light source matters for your studio
- Broader clientele: With 1064 nm, a laser also reaches darker skin types, where broadband light reaches its limits.
- Fewer sessions: Clients usually reach their goal faster, and satisfied clients recommend you.
- Clear communication: Anyone working with a laser can name the design and wavelengths. Terms like “SHR” or “light treatment” without further detail tell clients little.
- Speed is not a unique selling point: A diode laser with a high repetition rate also works in glide mode. Comfort also depends heavily on cooling.
The DEWEON 4LD: diode laser with in-motion speed
The DEWEON 4LD is a medical diode laser with four combined wavelengths (755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm) and 6000 W, also at the handpiece. With up to 30 Hz and spots up to 15 × 40 mm, you work quickly in glide mode on legs and back, and precisely on the upper lip and armpits with the smallest spot of 15 × 15 mm. Ice sapphire cooling down to −50 °C protects the skin surface; the AI skin analyzer detects skin and hair type and sets the parameters automatically. The device works with no shot limit and is designed for over 100 million shots. It is suitable for almost all skin types; for very dark skin, the AlexDUAL UFO with Nd:YAG 1064 nm is intended.

How to tell what a device really works with
- Ask about the light source: laser diode, crystal or flash lamp?
- Ask about the wavelength: fixed values point to a laser, a range to IPL.
- Ask to see the type plate and data sheet.
- Pay attention to the pulse: IPL flashes visibly bright, whereas the light of a near-infrared diode laser is barely visible.

Frequently asked questions
What does SHR mean in hair removal?
SHR stands for “Super Hair Removal” and describes a mode of operation: low energy per pulse, a high pulse rate and a handpiece that glides repeatedly over the skin in lanes. The heat in the follicle builds up gradually. This is also called the in-motion method.
Is SHR a laser?
No, SHR is not a light source but a treatment technique. It can be implemented with a diode laser or with an IPL device. Whether an “SHR device” is a laser can be recognized by the light source and the wavelength: fixed values for a laser, a range for IPL.
Which is better: SHR or diode laser?
The question compares a mode of operation with a light source. What matters is which light goes into the skin. A true diode laser concentrates the energy on fixed wavelengths and can also work in glide mode. The DEWEON 4LD combines four laser wavelengths with up to 30 Hz for in-motion work.
Is SHR less painful than the classic treatment?
Small studies show lower pain scores for the in-motion method with comparable hair reduction. How comfortable a treatment is also depends on energy, hair density and cooling. The DEWEON 4LD cools the skin via a sapphire down to −50 °C.
Can the DEWEON 4LD work in glide mode?
Yes. With a repetition rate of up to 30 Hz and spots up to 15 × 40 mm, the DEWEON 4LD is designed for quick work on large areas. With the smallest spot of 15 × 15 mm and pulse durations of 1 to 200 ms, you treat small areas precisely.
Which skin types are IPL with SHR and diode lasers suitable for?
IPL devices are mainly suitable for light skin with dark hair. The DEWEON 4LD is suitable for almost all skin types, with the exception of very dark skin. For that, the AlexDUAL UFO with alexandrite and Nd:YAG is intended for skin types I to VI.
